LaFayette police and fire departments, along with Walker County EMS, responded to an early Monday morning wreck in LaFayette involving a driver under the influence, police said.

At 9:46 a.m., dispatch was notified about a single-vehicle wreck in the 1000 block area of West Main Street, police said.

At 9:50 a.m., officers responded to the scene, where 68-year-old Aire Chester “Shorty” Butler of Chamberlain Road had lost control of his 1998 blue Ford E-150 van, left the roadway at 1007 W. Main St. traveled 350 feet on the shoulder of the road, and crashed into a small embankment.

According to LaFayette police officer Wesley Steele, there is an ongoing investigation. Butler failed a field so-briety test and was determined to be DUI, Steele said.

There was a female passenger with Butler, but no serious injuries were reported to either person.

Steele said the seatbelts were not used.
