A man that was shot in the stomach on Tuesday afternoon has died according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader.

Sheriff Schrader told AM 1180 that the when law enforcement arrived on the scene on Oneill Road, located off of Old Highway 27 north of Trion, the alleged shooter had fled into the woods.  Deputies set up a parameter around the area and the man was caught a short time later on Stoleman Road hitching a ride with a motorist who was unaware that the man had allegedly just shot someone.

The shooting victim, identified as forty-one year old John Evern D. England III or Summerville, was transported by Redmond EMS to a Rome hospital where he later died.

Sheriff Schrader says that they were having a hard time identifying the suspect because he would not give authorities his real name.  The GBI was called in to assist in processing evidence at the crime scene.

Sheriff Schrader said that they believe the suspect that they have in custody is Justin Lee Long of Cedar Bluff, Alabama.  Investigators were interrogating the suspect last night and were fingerprinting him to verify his identity.  Sheriff Shcrader said that Alabama authorities in Cherokee County have identified the man that is being held at the Chattooga County Jail as Justin Lee Long.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 10:45 AM

Sheriff Mark Schrader told AM 1180 on Wednesday morning that the suspect taken into custody is still being questioned and has not been formally charged as of this morning.  The GBI is still assisting in the investigation according to the sheriff.
