With the news of increased property values in Chattooga County this week, many people are planning to appeal their property taxes. The tax appeals are heard by the Chattooga County Board of Equalization and you must file an appeal in order to contest your tax assessment.
According to the Georgia Department of Revenue, the State of Georgia provides a uniform appeal form for use by property owners. To ensure the preservation of your appeal rights, it is essential to submit your property tax appeal to the County Board of Tax Assessors within 45 days from the date the Assessment Notice was sent.
You can download that form HERE
Appeals must be received or postmarked by the “Last date to file an appeal” date listed at the top of the assessment. The deadline for appeal is August 21, 2023.
What happens if you appeal your taxes and the county’s board of equalization denies your appeal? At that point, according to the Georgia Tax Payer’s Bill of Rights, the taxpayer may appeal to the superior court of the county after a decision has been made by the county board of equalization or an arbitrator or arbitrators.
Keep in mind, the estimated tax is not a ground for appeal, only the assessed value of the property.
