Earlier this month, the U.S. Labor Department released consumer inflation data showing inflation rose to its highest level in more than a decade in the 12 months ending in August, with a price increase of 5.3% nationwide.

Pork and chicken prices have risen exponentially, and beef prices increased 12% in the last year, making it one of the priciest items on a grocery list.

Food prices at grocery stores continue to wallop consumer wallets. Prices for a market basket of grocery food items were up notably in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly Consumer Price Index data released Wednesday morning showed.

For the last 12 months, there were double-digit increases in the meat category. Prices for roasts and steaks were up more than 20%. Ground beef, a staple for many uses, was up more than 10% for the last 12 months. The overall category for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs was up more than 17% from last September.

Pork products are up from August and more than 12% year-over-year. While bacon and its related products rose 2.6% and are down from August’s more than 3% increase, bacon prices are nearly 20% higher than this time last year.
All of this could make the cost of the upcoming holiday meals more than many families can handle.  Last year, the average cost of Thanksgiving dinner was just over $49, which was down from previous years.   It remains to be seen how much experts predict this year’s Thanksgiving feast will cost.   Those numbers are expected to be released sometime in the next two weeks.
