Memorial Day is the traditional kickoff for Summer and the day will be filled with BBQ’s and outdoor activities.  However, the main reason for Memorial Day is to remember those who paid the ultimate price for their country.

There are three days set aside to honor the military.  Veterans Day, held on Armistice Day – November 11th each year, is the day set aside to honor those living veterans who served in the United States military.  Armed Forces Day is the day set aside by the U.S. Department of Defense to honor those who are actively serving in the military.  Armed Services Day falls on the third Saturday of May.  Memorial Day, today, is the day to remember those veterans who have died defending our country.

Memorial Day is a Federal holiday which means banks, post offices and government offices will be closed today.  Also, Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry announced that the dumpster sites around the county and the Chattooga County transfer station will be closed today.
