Today is a Federal and state holiday – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  The post office, banks and many governmental offices will be closed today.

President Ronald Reagan signed into law a bill creating a national holiday to honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader who had been assassinated in 1968, while supporting a strike by black sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee.

Locally, a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day service is planned at the New Spirit and Truth Church of Jesus Christ located on Scoggins Street in Summerville.  A reception will be held at 5 PM and the service gets underway at 6 PM.  Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey will be the keynote speaker for the night.  There will be other speakers from the community as well.  Everyone is invited to attend.

UDPATE: The MLK service at New Spirit & Truth has been canceled for this evening.
