Last month, Mohawk Industries hosted nine blood drives at its manufacturing plants across Northwest Georgia, including the plant in Summerville.  The blood drives netted 177 units of blood that were distributed to various hospitals across the area.

Mohawk and Blood Assurance have partnered for blood drives since 2009. Historically, November sees a drop in blood donations and Mohawk’s slate of drives has addressed that. The blood collected in November was enough to save 531 lives.

“Historically, every November, we start to see a significant decline in the number of blood donations, according to Brian McDaniel, regional director of operations for Blood Assurance. “We are incredibly grateful to Mohawk and their commitment to community. The company’s employees really stepped up in these trying times, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in order to save countless more lives.”

To be eligible, potential donors must be 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. Donors should drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine, and eat a meal rich in iron prior to donating.
