NBC News reported the Ennis National Fish Hatchery ships rainbow trout eggs all over the country. That’s 35 different states, 75 different facilities that include state, federal and tribal hatcheries.
When workers in Ennis heard about the Summerville Trout Hatchery in Georgia losing 17,000 trout due to its facility being flooded by 14 inches of rain on Memorial Day weekend, the Ennis National Fish Hatchery was able to deliver a new shipment of rainbow trout eggs.
“We were able to ship one of our regular reoccurring requests of about 250,000 eggs to them and kind of help them out to replace some of those losses,” said Ron Hopper, fish biologist and manager of Ennis National Fish Hatchery.
With help from the Ennis National Fish Hatchery, the Summerville Trout Hatchery is back on track for its trout stocking heading into 2023.
Ennis sends about a million rainbow trout eggs annually to Summerville, and year-round the department sends around 20 million rainbow trout eggs to other hatcheries.
