Mount Vernon Mills in Trion is still recovering from a “ransomware” attack earlier this week that affected production at the manufacturing facility.
Ransomware is a type of computer malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system, either by locking the system’s screen or by locking the users’ files until a ransom is paid. Ransomware can be downloaded onto systems when unwitting users visit malicious or compromised websites. It can also arrive as a payload that is either dropped or downloaded by other malware.
There has been no confirmation from Mount Vernon as to what caused the malware attack, but the mill is slowly getting back to normal after this week’s attack.
Company officials say a backup could be installed and have the mill back to near-normal capacity by next week.
