January is National Blood Donor Month, and Blood Assurance is reminding residents that winter is one of the toughest times of the year to maintain a stable blood supply. Donations often drop because of holiday travel, seasonal illnesses, and weather-related disruptions—while hospital demand remains steady and can even rise.
Blood Assurance says it currently needs all blood types, with a critical need for O-negative blood, AB plasma, and platelet donations. Those products are vital for trauma care, cancer patients, and people undergoing major surgeries. The organization also points to national data showing someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds, yet only a small percentage of eligible donors give each year—meaning even a modest increase in donors can help prevent shortages.
To encourage giving during National Blood Donor Month, Blood Assurance is offering January incentives. All donors can receive a free blanket while supplies last. O-negative blood and AB plasma donors can receive a $25 e-gift card.
Appointments can be scheduled online at bloodassurance.org, and donors can also call 800-962-0628 or text BAGIVE to 999777.
Blood Assurance says donors typically must be at least 17 years old—or 16 with parental consent—weigh 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. Donors are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, avoid caffeine beforehand, and eat an iron-rich meal before donating.
Blood Assurance is a nonprofit regional blood center that supplies blood products to more than 70 healthcare facilities across parts of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and North Carolina.
