President Harry Truman with Evangelist Billy Graham

In 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed a joint resolution by Congress in order to declare a “National Day of Prayer.”  Every President since President Truman has continued to observe the tradition.   Today, the National Day of Prayer will be observed by people of all faiths across the country.  Here in Chattooga County, there are plans for local observances as well.

Prayer services are planned at various schools around Chattooga County as students are encouraged to gather and pray around the flag poles in front of the buildings.  Those services will be student-led and will take place before school starts today.

Then, between Noon and 1 PM, residents are encouraged to park and pray at the Chattooga County Courthouse.  Organizers for the National Day of Prayer observance locally say this will be a “drive-in and drive-out” event.

This evening, at 6:30 PM, local ministers will gather with the public at the Trade Day grounds to hold a service to observe the National Day of Prayer.

This year’s theme is “Lord, pour out your Love, Life and Liberty.”
