Sheriff Nick Weldon of neighboring DeKalb County, Alabama is issuing a crucial warning to local residents about a rising scam that is targeting unsuspecting individuals. The scam, which involves impersonators claiming to represent Publishers Clearing House, has alarmed authorities and prompted an urgent advisory for the community.
According to Sheriff Weldon, the scam typically involves a phone call from someone informing the recipient that they have won a cash prize. However, the callers often request personal information, banking details, or even money upfront to claim the supposed winnings. “If you receive a call from someone saying you have won money but they ask for money or your personal information, please just hang up the phone,” Weldon urged. The sheriff emphasized the importance of vigilance and caution when it comes to unsolicited calls. “If you did not initiate the call yourself and aren’t 100% sure who you are speaking with, do not give out your information, and do not send them money to access your winnings,” he added.
Weldon’s warning comes as part of a broader effort to protect community members from falling victim to scams that exploit their hopes for unexpected windfalls. Residents are encouraged to share this information with friends and family to help raise awareness and prevent potential financial loss.
If anyone believes they have been targeted by this scam or any other fraudulent activity, Sheriff Weldon urges them to report it to local law enforcement immediately.
