With the extremely hot temperatures lately, the Georgia Department of Transportation is reminding Georgia residents to never leave a child alone in a hot vehicle.

Georgia does not have laws specifically for children left in hot cars, but parents and caregivers can be charged with child cruelty. However, in 2015, the Georgia Senate passed a bill to protect Good Samaritans who try to save a child from a hot car.
If you see a child alone in a car, you should:
  • Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately
  • If the child is unresponsive or in distress, remove them from the car and move them to a cooler place
  • Remove the child’s clothing to help their skin cool down
  • If the child is not in distress, stay with them until help arrives and ask someone else to find the driver
