All signs point to Vance Smith becoming the next Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Smith, a Pine Mountain Republican, is chairman of the House Transportation committee and is a favorite of Rome DOT Board member David Doss.

It remains to be seen if Smith have any real power after the governor and state Legislature revamped the DOT.

Doss said the Commissioner and DOT Boards will continue to operate as normal, but a planning director, to be named by the governor, will have the most important input when it comes to prioritizing projects.
