New Laws will begin in Georgia on Jan. 1, 2025, changing tax policy, election laws, and education.

Senate Bill 366 enhances the transparency of tax expenditures. It demands 12 economic analyses every year, focusing on tax expenditures set to expire or costing over $20 million. The law requires summaries of these expenditures in the governor’s budget and annual legislative reviews, with input from economists and business leaders.

Senate Bill 212 reforms election processes by removing probate court judges’ roles and replacing them with county boards of elections and registration. These boards will oversee elections, voter registration, and absentee voting. The law also clarifies the powers of these boards and the roles of election staff in several counties.

The Georgia Promise Scholarship Act (Senate Bill 233) will begin in the 2025-26 school year, providing up to $6,500 per student for eligible education costs. Students must be zoned to low-performing schools or have attended a low-performing school for at least a year.
