Summerville officials say a new urgent care facility is now in the works, bringing new medical services—and new jobs—into a long-vacant commercial space in the city.

City leaders confirmed during a recent City Council meeting that a healthcare provider is moving forward with plans to open an urgent care center in the building next to Ingles, a site that previously housed a CVS Pharmacy and has sat empty for years. Contractors have already secured building permits and renovation work is underway, though the business license process was still pending at the time of the update.

The urgent care center is expected to employ between five and ten people and could be completed around February, depending on construction timelines.

Urgent care facilities typically provide walk-in treatment for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, including issues such as minor fractures and sprains, cuts that may require stitches, infections, fevers, and other common symptoms. The goal is to offer a convenient option for patients who need care quickly but do not require an emergency room visit.

If finalized, the project would expand local access to medical care while helping put a currently unused property back into service—an addition city officials say could benefit residents and visitors alike.
