North Georgia EMC crews are working to restore power to more than 4,000 members affected by today’s severe storms in Gordon County. Powerful winds damaged numerous utility poles, transformers, and brought down large spans of power lines along with many trees.
Preliminary assessments indicate approximately 100 electricity poles will need to be replaced in the Gordon County area. The full extent of the damage to the electric system continues to be assessed by field personnel. Many areas are still impassable due to trees and debris in road ways and on power lines, hindering crews’ access and slowing restoration efforts.
“We ask that people in the affected areas stay off the roads for their safety and so power crews and other emergency personnel can work safely and efficiently as well.” said Paul Ruud, VP of Engineering and Operations for NGEMC.
Members are encouraged to prepare for extended outage times due to the scope of the damage. Contract crews are assisting the NGEMC crews with the restoration efforts. Crews will remain on duty until all power has been restored.
Due to an approaching cold front, wind gusts may continue through tonight potentially causing additional power outages. Stay away from fallen power lines and report them immediately to NGEMC, your local utility or 911.
Customers without electricity may report their power outages through the NGEMC Mobile App, the NGEMC Mobile Web App, or by calling their local NGEMC office and using the automated telephone outage reporting system. During widespread outages, NGEMC customers may experience longer than normal wait times due to extremely high call volume.
