When the remnants of  a tropical storm barreled through Northwest Georgia a few weeks ago, downtown Summerville was flooded, affecting businesses and some residences. 

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry along with Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey and Trion Mayor Larry Stansell issued a local emergency declaration – the first step in trying to get the state and federal government to follow suit and prepare the way for disaster assistance.

Summerville City Councilman Joe Money said this week that unfortunately, no help will be coming from FEMA.  The dollar amount of the damage just didn’t add up to enough for a disaster declaration past the local level.

Money told WZQZ News that the flooding issue is going to be looked at by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to see what steps can be taken to alleviate the problem in the future.

In the meantime, the city plans to remove some downed trees and beaver dams from Town Creek that should provide extra drainage capability in the event of another heavy rainfall.
