Residents of Northwest Georgia and Chattooga County can look forward to a dry and largely pleasant weekend with seasonal temperatures, according to the latest weather forecast. However, a significant shift is expected to bring widespread clouds and tropical moisture, along with increased chances of rain, beginning Sunday and lasting into the early part of next week.

Dry and Mild Through Saturday

Today and Saturday will see upper ridging dominating the eastern U.S., resulting in stable weather conditions. A weak “CAD” (cold air damming) situation will keep a refreshing northeasterly breeze in place today, gradually shifting to an easterly flow by Saturday.

Dewpoints are expected to remain relatively dry, primarily in the 50s, making for comfortable conditions. Afternoon high temperatures will reach the upper 70s to low 80s. While some high clouds may increase on Saturday as a tropical wave approaches Florida, the chance of rain for Northwest Georgia will remain very low.

Tropical Moisture Surge Expected Sunday and Monday

The weather pattern will undergo a notable change as an easterly wave tracks northwestward from Florida into Georgia starting Sunday. This will usher in a substantial surge of tropical moisture. Forecasters anticipate mean precipitable water values, a measure of atmospheric moisture, to reach between 1.8 and 2.1 inches by Sunday night.

This influx of moisture will lead to widespread cloud cover on both Sunday and Monday. While rain is expected, particularly between Sunday evening and Monday as a trough axis swings through the state, rainfall totals may be limited. Despite very high moisture levels, saturated atmospheric profiles are expected to limit instability, which is crucial for heavy thunderstorm development.

According to ensemble guidance, the potential for rainfall amounts over 1 inch by Monday evening remains below 20% for northern and western Georgia. East-central Georgia has a slightly higher chance, closer to 50%.

Lingering Moisture and Increased Rain Chances Mid-Week

The tropical moisture is projected to linger in the region through Tuesday and Wednesday, with precipitable water values remaining at or above 1.5 inches. This sustained moisture, combined with daytime heating, will fuel more diurnally driven shower and thunderstorm activity on both days.

For portions of north and central Georgia that experience thunderstorms, there will be a “decent opportunity” for total rainfall amounts to exceed an inch by Wednesday night.

Temperatures Remain Steady, Nights Get Warmer

Throughout this period, high temperatures are expected to remain relatively flat, consistently reaching the upper 70s and low 80s.

A more significant temperature shift will be felt overnight. Elevated surface dewpoints, largely in the 60s, combined with widespread cloud cover, will hinder overnight radiational cooling. As a result, overnight lows on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday will be 10 to 20 degrees above seasonal averages, settling in the upper 60s.

Residents are advised to enjoy the pleasant conditions this weekend and prepare for increasing cloud cover and higher humidity, along with potential rain showers, as the new week begins.
