Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said on Thursday that the unemployment rate in the Northwest Georgia Region is down over the previous month.  Numbers from April were released yesterday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

“Empowering the right people, in the right place, at the right time to make the right decisions is why Georgia continues to lead the nation in low unemployment and job opportunities for hardworking Georgians,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “From the state to the local level, Georgia is focused on creating an environment where businesses can thrive, and everyday workers can find good jobs and build better lives.”

The Northwest Georgia unemployment rate was down three-tenths to 2.8 percent over-the-month, the rate was 2.8 percent one year ago. The labor force was down 1,736 over-the-month and up 8,976 over-the-year, to 446,111. The number of employed was down 322 over-the-month and up 8,463 over-the-year, to 433,522. Initial claims were up 989 (54%) over-the-month and down 1,210 (-30%) over-the-year, to 2,806.
