NOT MUCH WAS FOUND BY ARCHAEOLOGISTS DIGGING AT THE SUPPOSED SITE OF FORT CUMMING IN LAFAYETTE.  THE CHEROKEE-REMOVAL STOCKADE HELD UP TO 1,000 NATIVE INDIANS BEFORE THEIR FORCED DEPARTURE TO OKLAHOMA.  NOW, THE TRAIL OF TEARS ASSOCIATION WANTS TO VERIFY THE SITE ON THEIR NATIONAL REGISTRY.  THE TEAM, WORKING NEAR BIG SPRING IN LAFAYETTE, TURNED-UP VERY FEW ARTIFACTS AND SOIL STAINS TO INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF THE 1830’S ERA STOCKADE.  NOW THEY THINK THE FORT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN LOCATED AS CLOSE TO THE SPRING AS ORIGINALLY THOUGHT.  ANOTHER DIG IS PLANNED FOR EARLY NEXT YEAR.
