This past Saturday, June 7th, a woman reported a possible scam at the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office. She had placed an ad on CraigsList to sell her wedding rings for $900 on June 5th.
She received an email offering $860 for them from a potential buyer. She accepted the offer and was told that she would receive payment via PayPal. She received emails via PayPal and was informed that the payment would be made within 24 hours. She mailed the rings to an address in Texas that she was told was the buyer's cousin.
She contacted PayPal customer service shortly after concerning her payment and was told that the emails she received were not actually from PayPal. She was unable to make contact with the buyer by email or text after that. The case is still under investigation.
