U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is intensifying pressure on the U.S. Postal Service to appoint a qualified Postmaster General capable of resolving the ongoing mail delivery issues plaguing Georgia. His call comes after the recent resignation of former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy. Senator Ossoff is urging the USPS Board of Governors to prioritize competence and experience in their search for DeJoy’s replacement, emphasizing the need for leadership that can effectively address the chronic delays affecting on-time mail delivery across the state. “It is crucial that the postal service be led by someone competent – by someone who is hired on their merit and not by their political connections,” Ossoff stated. “That is exactly what I am urging the USPS Board of Governors to do. Georgians have now paid the price for a year and a half of incompetent management by a patronage hire.”

The consequences of these postal delays have been far-reaching and detrimental, impacting Georgians in numerous ways. Seniors have faced difficulties receiving critical prescriptions, small businesses have struggled to deliver products to market, and taxpayers have experienced delays in receiving crucial W2 forms. “It’s been just an embarrassment,” Ossoff said. “Folks are getting into hot water with the IRS because their returns are getting lost. People are missing notices to appear in court. I’ve heard stories about people who have gotten warrants, not because they did anything wrong, but because they got a notice to appear in court, and the letter never came. The court thinks they are blowing off the letter, and they issue a warrant. I mean, that’s scary stuff.”

Data released by the USPS last month reveals the severity of the problem, showing that Georgia’s overall first-class mail service is lagging 7.7 percent behind the national average. Senator Ossoff’s push for new leadership aims to rectify these systemic issues and ensure reliable mail service for all Georgians.
