An overturned tractor trailer in Menlo kept Menlo firefighters and Chattooga County Deputies on the scene on Highway 48 all day Thursday and well into the evening.

Apparently the driver was hauling a load of latex in a tanker trailer and missed his turn on Highway 337 for a delivery to Best Manufacturing.  He wound up trying to turn on Edison Street, but when he made the right hand turn his trailer went into the ditch and wound up overturning.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader was on the scene shortly after 8 AM.  Schrader said that only a small amount of latex leaked out of the tanker.  Menlo firefighters remained on the scene all day as a Hazmat Team was called in from Dalton and another tanker was brought in to offload the latex.

Highway 48 was shut down to one lane from Jamestown Road to Shinbone Valley road while the tanker was offloaded and Luallen’s Wrecker Service from Summerville set the tanker back upright.  Afterword, the Hazmat crew had to dig up dirt where diesel fuel had spilled out.
