Georgia Traveler enjoys adventures from  the Classic City to the coast this week as the crew heads to Athens for the Athens Food Tour and Cumberland Island for a stay at the romantic Greyfield Inn. Plus, we head to Lookout Mountain for a ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway and we visit Paradise Garden, home to the work of legendary artist and preacher Howard Finster.

 

If you’ve got an appetite, the Athens Food Tour is for you.  David Zelski joins tour guide Mary Charles Howard for an exploration of the historic downtown district where they taste dishes from locally owned eateries and sip some freshly roasted coffee from Jittery Joe’s. Along to the way, they also stop at Clocked! for the one-of-a-kind Bacon Peanut Butter Burger, Cajun tots & chocolate milkshakes.

 

All aboard!  David explores a treasure that holds the title of “The Steepest Passenger Rail in the World” when he checks out the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway. The one mile ride begins in the quaint town of St. Elmo, Tennessee, cuts through the national battlefield park and unloads in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, just down the plateau from the town of Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

 

Howard Finster may very well be the most well know modern folk artist of the 20th Century. Bruce Burkhardt explores the late legendary artist’s work at Paradise Garden, a visual art site in Summerville consisting of   a maze of buildings, sculptures and displays. The garden was built from found objects and recycled materials ranging from bottles, bathtubs to bicycle frames and cast-off jewelry. Bruce takes us on a tour of this artistic garden and explores the magic and messages Finster left behind.

 

Ashley Mengwasser visits one of the world’s top-rated inns right here in Georgia. Located on the state’s southernmost coastal island, Cumberland Island, The Greyfield Inn was first built as a home in 1900 by Thomas and Lucy Carnegie for their daughter, Margaret Ricketson It was converted to an inn during 1962 by Mary’s daughter, Lucy R. Ferguson. Today, innkeeper Mitty Ferguson and his wife Mary run the operation that offers the comfortable familiarity of a family member’s home. The historic Greyfield Inn continues to earn its title as one of America’s top ten most romantic inns.
