Authorities say they now know the identity of the man who stabbed someone in the Murphy USA parking lot in LaFayette on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and they are asking citizens to be on the lookout.

Joseph Shropshire, 39 of LaFayette, is wanted for assaulting 19-year-old William Denton Gilbert by stabbing him in the face.

Shropshire recently served 10 years in prison on assault charges and was released in 2006.

Background

According to LaFayette police reports:

On Tuesday, Nov. 30, at around 9:30 p.m., 19-year-old William Denton Gilbert and a friend were purchasing cigars at the Murphy USA. As they were leaving the front of the store, Gilbert and his friend told the female cashier, “Hey, how are you doing?” and “Have a nice day.”

After this occurred, Shropshire came from between the kiosk and a set of displays and told the two men not to be “talking to his woman like that.”

Shropshire continued to follow Gilbert and friend, while the two headed towards their truck.

A verbal altercation ensued and Shropshire began to take his coat and hat off and said, “You don’t want any of this.”

Gilbert then lunged at Shropshire and Shropshire stabbed him twice in the face.

Gilbert then ran towards Wal-Mart and Shropshire ran to a green Jimmy truck, got in and left with another white male, heading north on U.S. 27.

LaFayette police lead investigator Darin Kelley soon arrived on the scene and recovered a gray toboggan and a Motorola Bluetooth headset.

Authorities are asking citizens to assist in finding the whereabouts of Shropshire, who stabbed Gilbert in the face, and the white male who was driving the green Jimmy truck.

Anyone with information on the two individuals is asked to contact the LaFayette Police Department at 706-639-1500.

Additional arrests

Kelley said Monday, Dec. 13, that Angela McMullen, 34 of LaFayette, was charged with giving false statements to authorities and was booked at the Walker County jail and was still in custody as of Sunday, Dec. 12.

McMullen and Shropshire both live on Roy Marsh Lane in LaFayette.

William Denton Gilbert, 19 of LaFayette, turned himself into authorities on Friday, Dec. 10, for assault, due to his confrontation with Shropshire.

Gilbert admitted to getting out of his truck and grappling Shropshire to the ground.

Gilbert has been released on bond.
