Floyd County Police have released the official report detailing a two-vehicle collision last week that tragically claimed the life of 15-year-old David Clemones, an Armuchee High School student and front-seat passenger. The report indicates that a failure to yield while turning left at a busy intersection led to the fatal incident.

According to the police report, the accident occurred when a Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 16-year-old male, was traveling eastbound on the bypass and approached the Calhoun Road intersection. The Silverado had a green light, but crucially, did not have a green or yellow turn arrow for left turns.

The driver of the Silverado reportedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic and turned left directly into the path of a westbound Dodge Ram pickup. The Ram was driven by a 56-year-old Armuchee man.

The force of the impact caused the Dodge Ram to overturn, ultimately coming to rest on its top with its bed positioned on the bed of the Silverado. Both teenage occupants of the Silverado were trapped within the vehicle and required extrication by emergency personnel.

David Clemones, who was a front-seat passenger in the Silverado, was transported to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

The 16-year-old driver of the Silverado was also transported for treatment of serious injuries, including a broken rib, a broken clavicle, and a fractured vertebrae. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The 56-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram was taken by ambulance to the hospital with less severe injuries.

The loss of David Clemones has sent shockwaves through the Armuchee High School community and beyond. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of adhering to traffic laws and exercising caution, particularly when navigating intersections and making turns.
