A Summerville man reported that he may have been the victim of a financial card scam on January 4. According to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department, the man said he received a postcard in the mail advising him to call a phone number and that he had been selected to receive $100 in gift rebates at certain stores. He said he called the number and was told that he would receive a $100 card that he could spend at Walmart or Target. He was told the card would be mailed out next month. The man said he did give his debit card information to the person on the phone since he was told there was a $4 transaction fee and then a $29 monthly fee.  The man said after he gave the attendant his debit card information he told him to "cancel the whole thing." The man said he checked with his bank and found that $4.95 had been taken from his account, which the bank restored. He said the man on the phone did not identify the company and he could not remember his name. The incident has been turned over to investigators.
