Things are taking shape on “schoolhouse hill” in Menlo with the construction of the new Menlo Elementary School making good progress.

The project began in 2021 after the Chattooga Board of Education cleared the way for the new facility at Chattooga County’s oldest school facility. Some of the buildings at the current school campus have been in use for over 80 years.  The board of education said that it was imperative that a new facility be built to meet modern safety standards. Ground clearing began in October of last year and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in February of this year.

Chattooga Board of Education Chairman Eddie Elsberry told WZQZ News, “The Menlo School project is something special and will add another top tier facility for the students of Chattooga County. The lower level is about 50% complete and the upper main floor is almost ready for roof to be installed.”  Elsberry added, “Overall we have had good weather and are on or slightly ahead of the projected timeline.”

Chattooga County School Supt. Jarod Hosmer is meeting with the contractor and architect today for updates on the progress at the new Menlo Elementary School facility.
