Floyd County police and officials with GBI’s Financial Crimes Unit are still sorting through what is described as “mounds of paperwork” in the investigation into thefts from the Floyd County Board of Education.

Major Mark Wallace said part-time employees have also been hired to input financial data in connection with the probe into former maintenance director Derry Richardson and others.

The investigation began in April of last year when Floyd County School officials uncovered discrepancies were uncovered dating back several years.  

No arrests have been made but Wallace said, “We’re beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Richardson admitted in an affidavit filed in Chattooga County Superior Court to stealing at least $600,000 from Floyd County Schools and using it to buy property, furnish his residence and even purchase stocks.

More than 15 other people have been added to the racketeering case.

Dr. Tony Daniel, vice chairman of the Floyd County Board of Education, addressed the investigation on John Druckenmiller’s Hometown Headlines.

“We don’t know a lot other than the investigation is moving forward,” Daniel said.

Richardson has hired high profile attorney Don Samuel to represent him in the case.
