AAA is forecasting a record-breaking holiday travel season, with 122.4 million Americans expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the 13-day year-end period running from December 20 through January 1. That marks a 2.2% increase over last year and surpasses the previous record of 119.7 million travelers set in 2024.
“People are eager to travel this holiday season,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “That’s leading to record numbers on the roads and in the skies. Our advice is to plan ahead, book early, allow extra time, and consider travel insurance, especially when flying during winter weather.”
Travel by the Numbers
Nationwide, 109.5 million people will travel by car, making road trips the overwhelming favorite at 89% of all holiday travel. Air travel is also setting records, with more than 8 million passengers expected — the first time year-end air travel has topped that mark. An additional 4.9 million travelers will use buses, trains, or cruises, showing the fastest growth rate among all travel modes.
Here in Georgia, 3.8 million residents are projected to travel, also a record. Of those, 3.4 million will drive, nearly 200,000 will fly, and more than 201,000 will use other transportation options.
“More than 3.8 million Georgians will travel this holiday season, setting a new record,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “With busy roads and airports, planning ahead is key.”
Costs and Conditions
AAA booking data shows domestic airfare averaging $890, up 7% from last year, while international flights have dropped to about $1,400, down 14%. Hotel stays and rental cars are also slightly more expensive, though gas prices are providing some relief, with the national average falling below $3 per gallon, the lowest in four years.
Travel Tips
AAA reminds drivers to prepare vehicles before hitting the road, slow down around roadside workers, and designate sober drivers during December, which is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Air travelers are urged to arrive early, monitor flight alerts, and pack essentials in carry-on bags.
Warm-weather destinations like Orlando, Miami, and Honolulu top the domestic list, while Cancun, Punta Cana, and Cozumel lead international travel.
With packed highways and full flights expected, AAA says flexibility and preparation will go a long way toward a smoother holiday journey.
