School is back in session and once again those yellow school buses are rolling across Chattooga County.   Local school officials and law enforcement say that it important for motorists to be reminded about the rules concerning school bus traffic.

A lot, if not most, of the roads that school buses travel in Chattooga County are two-lane roads.  On those roads, vehicles traveling in both directions must stop while a bus is loading or unloading children.

On multi-lane roads, such as the Lyerly Highway (Highway 114), with a paved turn lane between the lanes of traffic, all vehicles must stop in BOTH directions when the bus is loading or unloading students.

On a divided highway – or a highway with dirt, grass or a barrier median between the lanes of traffic, vehicles behind a bus loading or unloading children must stop.  Vehicles traveling in the other direction must use caution.

Also, it is a good idea that with buses on Chattooga County’s roadways, you allow a little extra time for your morning and afternoon commute if you travel in a bus route.

Local law enforcement will be out during this first full week of school to make sure that motorists are obeying the law regarding school buses.
