State Representative Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo) told AM 1180 that she along with State Senator Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville) spoke with Governor Nathan Deal on Tuesday (March 29, 2011) about concerns regarding the closure of Northwest Regional Medical Center in Rome. The state run hospital is scheduled for closure by the state later this year.
Reece said that the governor was receptive to the concerns she and Senator Loudermilk had about the ramifications the closure would have on mental health patients in Northwest Georgia. Reece said that she thinks that the "groundwork has not been laid (to deal with the patients)" and that she hopes the state will "slow down and make sure what kind of support is out there for these patients."
Along with concerns about mental health patients there are about 700 jobs that will be lost from the closure of the hospital. Over forty of those jobs belong to residents of Chattooga County.
