Republicans blocked a move in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday to extend unemployment benefits to over 2 million Americans without jobs.  Republican leaders said that the bill would add too much to the national debt to approve. 

Some Republicans and conservative Democrats in Congress have said that they would support an extension of the unemployment benefits if a way could be found to cut spending elsewhere to pay for the bill.  Both of Georgia’s Republican Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson voted against the extension yesterday.  A small group of protesters outside the capital in Washington D.C. asked “where’s the bail-out” for workers looking for a job – referring to the bailout of the auto and banking industry.
