Lawmakers in Atlanta are considering changes to Georgia’s voting laws.  Several bills on voting reform were being offered in both the House and the Senate at the Gold Dome.

It now appears that Republican leadership in the General Assembly is backing away from the idea of doing away with Sunday voting.  This comes after pressure from Democrats and Voting Rights advocates who objected to the idea of doing away with Sunday voting.

Instead, the GOP leadership is backing a measure that would still allow for Sunday voting, and would leave the option for an additional weekend of early-voting, but that decision would be left up to local county voting officials.

Also, the GOP appears to be backing down on stricter ID requirements for absentee voting.  The two bills being considered still contain rules changes that would require registered Georgia voters to provide the number on their driver’s license or state ID card to request and cast absentee ballots.

If they do not have those ID forms, voters instead would have to send in a copy of their passport, employee ID card, utility bill or bank statement.

The Georgia General Assembly is set to adjourn for the year next week.
