Despite the fact the City of Summerville budgets a $10,000 donation each year for the upkeep of Summerville Cemetery, their are many complaints from the community about the state of the cemetery.   Complaints about limbs and debris and poor mowing are just some of the complaints that residents have voiced.

The cemetery is overseen by a private non-profit.  Years ago, the upkeep of the cemetery was paid for by selling additional plots.  However, as families have already purchased those grave-sites and the cemetery continues to fill up, there is less revenue coming in to provide for the upkeep.

Now, some are calling for the City of Summerville to take over the upkeep.  Last week, the local paper wrote an editorial column expressing the need for the mayor and city council to consider taking over the cemetery like the neighboring Town of Trion does.

WZQZ has spoken with several area residents with family members buried at the cemetery that are expressing the same view as the local paper.

A city council member told WZQZ News recently that talks have been going on between council members, the city manager and the current trustees of the Summerville Cemetery about the future.
