Dougherty Gap Road – April 2022

A road on Lookout Mountain has reopened after being closed a few months due to damage from a landslide last year. 

Dougherty Gap Road is located about two and one-half miles from the Chattooga County line in Walker County at Cloudland.  The road is used by residents on the mountain to travel to LaFayette and Chickamauga and runs through Mountain Cove Farms at the foot of the mountain.

The road washed out several months ago causing portions of the road to collapse, forcing its closure.  Walker County officials closed the road on April 25th of this year to begin repairs.  The majority of the cost to repair was picked up by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Workers have installed soil nails, erosion control and done more clearing and grading and upgrades to guardrails and drains on the mountainside road.
