A twenty-six-year-old Rome man was jailed over the weekend after police and fire officials say that he intentionally set fire to his step-mother’s mattress at a mobile home on Addington Drive in Rome.

The victim, identified as seventy-year-old Sarah Lynn Lary, perished in the fire, along with two dogs and a cat.

Fire officials received a call that a victim was trapped inside the burning mobile home around 9 PM on Saturday.  By the time firefighters found the victim, she was already deceased.

Timothy Edward Lary, who lived at the mobile home with his father and step-mother, reportedly made incriminating remarks to Floyd County Police at the scene of the fire and was arrested and charged with three counts of first degree arson, two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of cruelty to animals, neglect of a disabled or elder person and criminal damage to property in the first degree.

He has additionally been charged with murder.

The Georgia State Fire Marshal is assisting Floyd County authorities in the ongoing investigation.
