The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the school shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday that left two teachers dead and nine additional people injured.  A fourteen-year-old student, Colt Gray, has been arrested and charged with murder.

According to the GBI, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at about 10:20 a.m., Barrow County authorities received alerts about reports of an active shooter. Radio chatter from an Apalachee High School resource officer also indicated an active shooter. Within minutes, law enforcement was on scene. Once on scene, law enforcement immediately located Gray. Gray surrendered immediately and was taken into custody.

Two Chattooga County teachers have close connections with Apalachee High School.  Robin Mitchell, a teacher at Leroy Massey Elementary School has a son who teaches at the high school; so does Chattooga Head Football Coach Roon Gable.  Both of their sons are fine, but shaken according to source.

Chattooga County School Supt. Michelle Helie sent a message to the Superintendent of the Barrow County School System expressing Chattooga County’s prayers and concerns for the school.

The GBI says that the investigation into the shooting is “active and ongoing”.
