The Sons of Confederate Veterans will celebrate the birthday of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Silver Creek United Methodist Church in Floyd County.

Benny Watt Terry, a member of the Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp 469 who is organizing the celebration, said the celebration would feature a covered dish lunch and then a buttermilk toast to the general’s memory.

"That was General Forrest’s favorite drink, so every year we meet and toast him with buttermilk," Terry said.

Forrest’s birthday is celebrated on July 13. He died on Oct. 29, 1877 in Memphis, Tenn., and was a celebrated Confederate general who on May 3, 1863 saved Rome from capture with 600 troops, taking 1,700 Union prisoners in the process.
