With the announcement that Dixie Specialty Fibers in Trion would be shutting down operations, around 80 employees were left without a job. Also, the Town of Trion was left with an empty manufacturing facility in the town’s industrial park.
Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas said last week, that he realized that the decision to close the facility was a difficult one. The mayor said that the transition during the closing has been “very smooth”. The mayor added that Dixie is actively seeking a buyer to purchase the facility.
David Tidmore, a former president of the Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce who serves as treasurer for the Northwest Georgia Joint Development Authority, told the Chattanooga Times-Free Press that he hopes the industrial site being given up by Dixie Specialty Fibers can be used to recruit other businesses to Trion and make up for the job losses.
“I am concerned about these job losses even during a period of relatively low unemployment,” Tidmore said in a phone interview with the Chattanooga paper. “But, hopefully, the industrial park can be used to recruit other employers.”
Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas told the newspaper that the town and county tax authorities are still calculating what Dixie Specialty Fiber will have to pay in back taxes.
