Georgia Senate Republicans met fresh off the midterm General Election last week to talk about leadership under the gold dome in Atlanta.  The Northwest Georgia senate district, that includes Chattooga County, won’t have the same clout coming into 2023 as it enjoyed while Jeff Mullis represented the district.

Mullis was the long time chairman of the Senate Rules Committee that basically set the agenda for the senate and determined which bills would see the light of day on the senate floor.  Mullis is being replaced by freshman Senator Colton Moore who spent a brief tenure in the Georgia House.  While in the House, Moore sometimes irritated the Republican leadership at the capital and at one time called for the resignation of House Speaker David Ralston.

On Friday of last week, Senate Republicans nominated Sen. John Kennedy of Macon president pro tempore. If elected by the full Senate on the first day of the 2023 session in January, Kennedy would succeed Sen. Butch Miller of Gainesville, who left the Senate in an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor. The GOP Caucus also elected Sen. Steve Gooch of Dahlonega majority leader, Sen. Jason Anavitarte of Dallas caucus chairman, and Sen. Randy Robertson of Cataula caucus whip.

The Republican saw their majority slip in the latest elections after losing one seat in the Senate.
