State Senator Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) isn’t giving much credit to a petition that has been signed by 1,800 Walker County residents requesting a change from the sole-commissioner form of government.
The LaFayette Underground, a blog site online, has long been a fierce opponent to both Walker County Commissioner Bebe Heiskell (R) and Senator Mullis. The LaFayette Underground site started a Change.org petition after Heiskell raised property taxes to meet a multi-million dollar budget shortfall.
Senator Mullis dismissed the petition as that of a “vocal minority” and told the Chattanooga Times-Free Press, “"In 15 years in office, I've talked to 10, 12 people about [the sole commissioner form of government]. In 15 years. Does that sound like a mandate to you? Does that sound like a large, grassroots movement to you? Not me. Not one [of the petitioners] has had the decency, the courage to sit down with any of us in the Senate delegation."
Heiskell told the newspaper that she wasn’t thought much about the petition either.
