A big shake up in Fort Oglethorpe on Friday when the city manager abruptly resigned due to, "reasons beyond his control," and the chief of police and public works director was fired.
City Manager Ron Goulard resigned effective Monday. He will be paid four months severance pay. Goulart gave no more details on his reason for resigning, but said "It was not his choice."
An interim city manager was voted in to serve in his place. The motion to appoint Harold Silcox as the interim city manager received the needed three votes, constituting a majority. One of those councilman reportedly was sworn into office just an hour prior to the meeting.
Police Cheif David Eubanks was told to hand in his badge after the council held an executive session on personnel. The reasons for his dismissal are unclear.
Also terminated was the Public Works Director Jeff Long. Long reportedly was fired because, when he was a city commissioner, he agreed to annex a piece of property into the county from the city in anticipation of the legislature approving such a measure.
