Sharon Evans has been appointed to serve as the new Walker County Tax Commissioner, following the retirement of longtime commissioner Carolyn Walker, who stepped down last week after more than 25 years of service to focus on her health.
Evans brings nearly 16 years of experience to the role, having worked in the Tax Commissioner’s office and serving as Chief Deputy Tax Commissioner since 2019. She says her top priority is ensuring a seamless transition.
“My goal is to keep the county functioning without any interruptions and for there to be a smooth transition,” Evans said. “I have great contacts at the state Department of Revenue on both the motor vehicle and property sides of the office, as well as all the necessary training. I’m ready to hit the ground running.”
A graduate of LaFayette High School, Evans was officially sworn in on March 25 and plans to continue the established policies and procedures already in place. She also praised the office staff, noting their commitment to providing quality service while following all laws and regulations.
The Walker County Tax Commissioner’s Office handles the collection of taxes on land, homes, mobile homes, and personal property, along with processing homestead exemptions and managing all motor vehicle transactions. Services are available at both office locations in Rock Spring and Rossville.
A special election to fill the remaining two years of Carolyn Walker’s term will be held on November 3. Candidate qualifying will take place from August 17 through August 19, with the qualifying fee to be set by the Walker County Board of Commissioners at its May 7 meeting.
