Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says he anticipates a move to the new Sheriff’s Office next to Hays State Prison sometime this fall.
A bid to redo the heating and cooling at the former GBI building near the prison was awarded to local contractor Evans Heating & Cooling. That work continues and is expected to be completed in time for the sheriff to move his office from the current location behind the Chattooga County Courthouse to the new building sometime in September.
The sheriff told the local newspaper this week that one of the biggest hurdles his department will face is moving the evidence room to the new facility. The sheriff says he will try to coordinate the move with court destruction orders to “destroy evidence before moving so we’re not moving stuff we don’t have to move”.
The jail will remain at its current location. That means there will be a 10-15 minute drive between the jail and the new sheriff’s office once the move is completed.
