Farm industry leaders in Georgia say that Georgia’s new tough immigration law is causing a shortage of migrant workers in the state. Agricultural leaders say that many foreign migrant workers are headed to Florida instead of Georgia because, even if they are legal migrant workers, they fear that they will be harassed under the new law that takes affect July 1. Reportedly Georgia’s Labor Commissioner and Ag Commissioner are working together to try to recruit unemployed Georgia workers to work in the fields. Some farmers have increased pay and the average is now $12.50 per hour – but they say getting Georgians to work in the hot, humid, labor intensive fruit and vegetable fields will be a hard task.
