A report of a firearm being discharged in a residential neighborhood on the afternoon of October 10th,  led to the arrest of two individuals, one for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Summerville Police were dispatched to 26 North Jones Street at approximately 12:25 PM following calls from concerned residents.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Allen Treadway and Brandon Hullett in front of the residence. A brown and black semi-automatic shotgun was observed propped in a chair near the front door. Initial questioning by responding officers revealed a confusing and contradictory account of events surrounding the discharge of the weapon.

Allen Treadway initially stated that he and Brandon Hullett had been shooting the shotgun into the air, claiming he had owned the firearm since childhood. However, when pressed by officers who were aware of Hullett’s felony conviction, the narrative shifted. Treadway pointed to Hullett and initially claimed the gun was unloaded when Hullett attempted to fire it. Hullett vehemently denied this, accusing Treadway of being “drunk as sh**” and fabricating the story.

The argument between the two men, according to Treadway, stemmed from Hullett’s desire for something he wouldn’t provide. Treadway admitted to allowing Hullett, who he knew had a prison record, to sleep on his porch despite the escalating tension.

Further questioning revealed more inconsistencies. Treadway initially stated Hullett shot the gun once, but then recanted, claiming he would now reveal the truth. He asserted that Hullett had shot the gun, struggling with the semi-automatic mechanism, and that he (Treadway) had also fired it. Treadway claimed they had recently purchased ammunition together at Easy Pawn.

Detective Cox, who arrived on the scene, had a gunshot residue (GSR) test kit available. It was during this interaction that Hullett’s story took another turn. He admitted to grabbing the gun from Treadway after it had been fired, stating he may have residue on him because he was standing next to Treadway when the shotgun ejected a shell, hitting him in the chin. This explanation was met with further denial from Treadway, who insisted Hullett had fired the gun first.

In a subsequent conversation, Hullett finally admitted to firing the shotgun once, stating it was “just some birdshot” and that he was being honest. Detective Cox, who had proceeded to the suspected firing location, discovered two spent shotgun shell casings and two cigarette butts of the same brand as those possessed by Treadway and Hullett. These were found approximately 27 feet from the roadway on Henley Street.

Based on the discovery of the spent shell casings and the confirmed felony status of Brandon Hullett, he was placed under arrest for convicted felon in possession of a firearm. A search of Hullett’s backpack revealed a hypodermic syringe, and it was noted that Hullett is not a diabetic.

Allen Treadway was also placed under arrest. The firearm was secured inside the residence. Further investigation into the events leading to the discharge of the firearm is ongoing.
