Chatooga County residents will be asked to vote on a Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) coming up in 2013.

Commissioner Jason Winters told AM 1180 that the county is preparing a list of projects now that will be funded by the tax.  Also, the municipalities in the county – Summerville, Trion, Lyerly and Menlo – will have to submit a list of projects to be funded by the tax which gets split up between the county government and municipal governments.

Winters said that the bulk of the tax will go towards roads and bridges.  Also the Chattooga County Water District will be receiving funds from the SPLOST.  Winters said that another project he plans to include in the SPLOST is courthouse renovation.

Chattooga County's courthouse was built in 1909 after a fire destroyed the old courthouse.  The aging building which is the dominant feature in downtown Summerville is in need of many upgrades.  Winters said the 100 year old building will need the upgrades to keep it functional for years to come.

Most of the projects that will be presented by the municipalities will be for paving of city streets.  The vote will be held sometime in 2013, possibly as early as March.
