A Summerville man who led Summerville Police, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies, a Georgia DNR Ranger and the Georgia State Patrol on a chase that started in Summerville and ended with the suspect crashing in Floyd County on Monday, reportedly admitted to trying to “run them over” – referring to Chattooga County Deputies who tried to stop him as he fled from law enforcement.
Wyatt Keith Stanfield was booked into the Chattooga County Jail after he crashed his 2005 Kia Sorento at the intersection of Highway 156 and Highway 27 in Floyd County. WZQZ reported on the chase earlier this week.
Stanfield was released to the custody of the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department after Deputy Jamey Dawson told the Georgia State Trooper that arrested Stanfield that the suspect had swerved and tried to hit sheriff’s deputies.
When Stanfield was transported to the hospital, he reportedly told the Emergency Room staff that he had been a chase with the police and tried to run them over.
You can read the report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office below:
On 06-22-2020 while on patrol, I received a call to assist Summerville Police Officers with a vehicle pursuit on Highway 114, West bound. I along with
Agent Gary Campbell was at 4804 Hwy 114 when the fleeing vehicle, which was a 2005 Kia Sorento silver in color with GA tag # (RWM8472), being
driven by Wyatt Keith Stanfield turned around and headed back East toward Summerville. SPD Officer Cox advised over the radio they were passing the
feed store (Pine Ridge Outdoors). At this time Agent Campbell pulled onto the left should and I pulled off the road onto the right shoulder and Deputy
Daniel Sanford was behind my vehicle. The suspect vehicle approached officers, making a direct attempt to strike Agent Campbell’s county owned
vehicle which he was attempting to exit prior to an impact. Then he swerved toward mine and Deputy Sandford’s patrol cars in an aggressive manner in
which I felt he was using offensively against officers with the ability to cause serious bodily injury. He was driving speeds in excess of 85 MPH according
to Officer Cox when he approached the Chattooga County Sheriff’s vehicles that were attempting to clear the path. After the violator’s acts of aggression
towards officers, the marked units driven by myself and Sanford gave chase after the Kia East on Hwy 114 toward Summerville. The pursuit went on and
the Kia turned South onto Hwy 27 then Chattooga 911 alerted Floyd County and GSP of the violations and conditions.
Chattooga County’s part in the vehicle pursuit was then discontinued by Cpl. Farmer. The pursuit had became too great a danger to the motorists on the
roadway and it would be approaching the construction zone on Taylor’s Ridge in heavy fog.
SPD Officer Cox also discontinued the pursuit but tried to keep the violator in sight and lost sight of the Silver Kia South of the intersection at Gore.
After the pursuit left Chattooga County all deputies involved met with Chief Woods and Sheriff Schrader at Hunter’s Furniture and after a few minutes we
were notified that the violator had wrecked in Floyd County. Sheriff Schrader advised to go meet with the trooper at the site of the collision where the
pursuit ended. Upon arrival, I spoke with Sgt. Gas of the GSP whom had taken the Wyatt Keith Stanfield into custody. Sgt. Gas transferred custody to
me due to the severity of the charges. Stanfield advised he wasn’t hurt in the collision and refused medical treatment and didn’t want an ambulance to
the scene. However as to our jail policy, Stanfield was transported to Redmond Medical Center for evaluation due to being involved in an auto accident.
Upon entering the Emergency Room at Redmond, the staff asked Stanfield as to the reason he was at the hospital he stated “that he had been a chase
with the Police and tried to run them over!”
Stanfield was treated and released from the hospital and transported to the Chattooga County Jail without further incident.
